Main tendencies of political week

Informational interpretations around Dmitry Medvedev’s activities were rather contradicting last week. On one side, the fact that the State Duma quickly passed the president’s initiative to alter the procedure of assigning powers to Constitutional Court leaders gave rise to debates about “authoritarian tendencies” in Russian politics. At the same time, the fact that the main reason for this was to unify the legislation, which in no way leads to infringement of the principles stipulated in the Constitution, was ignored.

On the other side, the head of state kept balancing his image. In particular, a commission to counteract falsification of history was established. This step was to a great extent due to the necessity to eliminate ‘liberal extremes’ that emerged on the informational field in April following several events – the president’s interview with Novaya Gazeta, release of Svetlana Bakhmina and Dmitry Medvedev’s speech at a meeting of the council for developing civil society institutions.

At the same time, the head of state again supported his image of reformer-technocrat having signed a number of decrees aimed at fighting corruption; he also formed a commission for the economy’s modernization and technological development.

On the party field there were several changes affecting the CPRF. In particular, an initiative to create the Communist of Russia movement was organizationally completed. In future it may become a spoiler of ‘old’ communists, if not an alternative to them. The new body is likely to have serious organizational and financial resources behind it and CPRF leaders will soon have to either seriously upgrade its approach to the party’s strategy or they will keep losing supporters.
