Power launch of the year (+ audio)

A new turbine – number four – has started up at the Sayano-Shushinskaya hydropower plant (SSHPP). This completes the first stage of the reconstruction of the largest hydropower plant in Russia. Energy buffs have dubbed this the event of the year.

The terrible accident that happened at SSHPP in August of 2009 damaged all turbines at the plant, either in part or in full. 75 people died.

Work on the liquidation of the consequences of the accident will be completed by 2015. Konstantin Simonov, the head of the National Energy Security Foundation highlighted the significance of this event:

The launch of the fourth turbine of the Sayano-Shushinskaya plant is undoubtedly the event of the year as far as power goes, Simonov points out. And it’s not just the scale of the accmomplished tasks that matters here. The accident at SSHPP cast doubt on the state of Russia’s entire energy system. So the fact that the plant has been revived ahead of schedule has an important psychological component - it’s not just about bringing new generating capacities. We have turned this frightful page, says the head of the Energy Foundation.

The Russian manufacturing sector, which is emerging from the crisis, has growing energy needs. The current year has seen over 3000 megawatts of generating capacities brought into operation, with almost 3000 kilometers of high-voltage power lines and 14000 kilometers of distribution grids installed.

The outgoing year was also marked by another important event: the start of construction work on the Nizhne-Bureysky hydropower plant, set to become the biggest in Russia. The Bureysky plant cascade will alleviate energy deficit problems in the Amur region and neighbouring areas for decades ahead. This is very important, particularly in light of Russia’s ambitious plans for the development of the Far Eastern region.
